From humble beginnings and a single request to use a quiet field, Brettona Bees has grown into a small but thriving network of hives dedicated to protecting pollinators, supporting biodiversity, and bringing people closer to nature.
What started as a need for a simple out-apiary has turned into something bigger: a buzzing hub of pollination, education, and environmental support, with sites at Houghton and Barton West.
Bees (and their fellow insects) are essential for pollination — not just for flowers, but for food production and the balance of nature.
Every hive helps support a wider web of life, from fruit-bearing plants to the animals that rely on them.
We’re proud to work with The Woodland Trust to plant native tree packs that support pollinators — species like goat willow, blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose and rowan.
These aren’t just trees. They’re food, shelter and lifelines for bees, insects and the ecosystems that depend on them.
The name Brettona harks back to the village’s earliest recorded identity — first noted around 1160, before it became known as Burton Salmon. Rooted in Old English, Brettona means “farmstead of the Britons,” a fitting echo of the land’s agricultural heritage and close relationship with nature.
The later addition of “Salmon” came from Salamone, a 13th-century landholder, but we’ve chosen to honour the original name — a quiet nod to the area’s deep history, resilience, and its connection to the land that now supports our hives and pollinators.
Help us protect pollinators and plant for the future. Whether you're an individual, school or business, you can sponsor a hive and support a vital part of our ecosystem.
From wedding favours to gifting a hive experience for a loved one, we have everything bee-related.
